The Good Samaritan - Stained Glass Window Detail

This image of the Good Samaritan is the central part of a larger leaded and hand-painted glass window, that was generously donated to our chapel.

The Good Samaritan Center of Fredericksburg serves the low-income, uninsured and underinsured residents of the Texas Hill Country (Gillespie, Blanco, Kimble, Llano and Mason counties) with affordable basic medical and dental care, diabetes testing and education, and spiritual counseling.

The patient's cost is $15 to $25 per visit, depending upon their family income. Laboratory fees, x-rays, and other tests are additional, although they are offered at a 95% discount thanks to the support of our local hospital. The center provides what medicines it can at no cost and we continue to add new services as needs demand, and time and finances permit.

Why We Do It

A study from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) found that Texas leads the nation in the percentage of uninsured adults—most of them employed. The report "is aimed at a common misperception: that all working people have insurance through their jobs. In fact, a 'significant number' of these uninsured adults are employed. In Texas, 30.7% of adults are uninsured, including 26.6% of working adults."

Many times I would have gone without treatment due to inability to pay, if The Good Samaritan Center had not been available.…

Statistics show that without insurance, because of putting off receiving medical care, an individual is four times more likely to be admitted to the hospital with a preventable disease, more likely to be diagnosed with late stage cancer, more likely to die from cancer, is more seriously ill upon hospitalization, and is three times more likely to die in the hospital.

How We Do It

The Good Samaritan Center of Fredericksburg operates on the generous donations of individuals, churches, corporations, foundations, and patient fees (the latter cover about 20% of our operating expenses). A small core staff of lay and part-time medical professionals are augmented by over 90 volunteers including doctors, dentists, nurses, front desk and administrative personnel, clergy, landscapers, and our board of directors.
